rethinking toilet paper

I read the New York Times online every day. I look for news that I wouldn't find in my local paper, local television, or national news. Today I came across this article on the environmental impact of toilet paper: Mr. Whipple Left It Out: Soft Is Rough on Forests.

Even though I cloth diaper, I'm embarassed to say I've never really given toilet paper much thought. It gets flushed down the toilet and I don't see where it goes, so I think I'm able to imagine that it somehow has no environmental effect. I think a lot about the rest of the trash our household produces: we try to buy products with minimal packaging, we reuse items whenever we can, we donate what we can't use instead of throwing it away, and we recycle everything we can.

So why haven't I given toilet paper any thought? Now I'll have to.

  1. Save Trees? Save money and the Earth and be clean at the same time! Get serious and add Bathroom Bidet Sprayers to all your bathrooms. I think Dr. Oz on Oprah said it best: "if you had pee or poop on your hand, you wouldn't wipe it off with paper, would you? You'd wash it off” Available at www.bathroomsprayers.com with these you won't even need toilet paper any more, just a towel to dry off! Don’t worry, you can still leave some out for guests and can even make it the soft stuff without felling guilty. It's cheap and can be installed without a plumber; and runs off the same water line to your toilet. You'll probably pay for it in a few months of toilet paper savings. And after using one of these you won't know how you lasted all those years with wadded up handfuls of toilet paper. Now we're talking green and helping the environment without any pain.

  2. With the bidet you will still plenty of fam cloth. Its pretty easy to make the change. We dont use bidets, I just use fam cloth. Double layer flannel 7x7 squares or single layer bamboo bc its thicker. We have about 400 wipes, 4 bathrooms, wet bag hanging in each one. Then plenty of unpaper towels in the kitchen and the barn and once a wk, all goes on one rinse, one hot wash and on the line. Its easy, cheap and saves the earth. We have been all cloth for nearly 4 yrs now and its very freeing!
