I've decided to "re-open" my Hyena Cart store so I'm stocking on Tuesday, January 1st. For all of January, you can pay for shipping using $HC. I'll be stocking the first and third Tuesdays of every month from now on.

A visit to a yarn store
I very rarely get to visit a yarn store by myself. I almost always have 1 (and usually 2) children with me. My most recent visits to yarn stores have been disasters now that my youngest is walking, talking, and yanking things off shelves. We visited a store last month only to have my daughter knock over their coffee accessories shelf (cups, stirrers, etc) and pull down just about every button they had on display. It was my fault. I should have put her in a stroller but I was lazy. I'm now very nervous about returning there.
So I ventured to a different yarn shop today, The Yarn Sellar, nervously hoping I'd have a more successful trip. And by more successful I mean that my daughter wouldn't tear the store apart or start screaming. So I brought a stroller this time and a box of animals crackers. And it worked! I had to move fast but I got my shopping done. And the two times I've visited this store, the women who work there have been friendly, helpful and, most importantly, not put off by my children. In fact, the women have made my children and me feel welcome. And today Keane was on the CD player, so the trip was that much more enjoyable.
One more thing: the store had a beautiful hat and pair of booties on display. When I asked about the pattern, the woman gave me these links: "suede" booties and "suede" baby hat. Now I just need someone I know to have another baby!

Francesca's new longies!
My poor daughter has recently outgrown all of her longies and has been wearing capris and soakers even though we're in the middle of winter here. I finally found some time to make her a new pair right before Christmas. I used peruvian wool dyed by Maggie of Burgh Baby Gear. Maggie and I traded in November: I made her daughter a pair of longies in exchange for 4 skeins of dyed wool. Maggie was wonderful to work with and her colorways are beautiful. Now Francesca has a comfy new pair of longies to keep her dry and warm!

scrappies
For the past month, I've been busy working on lots of things. In addition to a couple of pairs of longies, I've been working on some wool toys, a pair of leg warmers, a poncho and two hats. There is something about making toys that is addictive. I think it might be that you can finish one in a relatively short amount of time and then move on to a different pattern. My favorite two non-food toys so far are these little guys!
The owl's green body is made of Malabrigo. I love the feel of Malabrigo and love working with it. I've also just made a pear out of that same Malabrigo and will post pictures of that soon.
I made the hat below for the little girl who also owns the monster longies.

exciting day!
Today I walked out to my mailbox and found it completely empty. That never happens. We always get at least some junk mail. As I was walking back to the house, however, I saw a stack of packages next to the garage. That's right...packages!
So today I received the Castle of Llyr organic merino that I won last week at the Elliebelly charity raffle! Check out her website to read more about her upcoming donations to heifer.org.
With the yarn that I won, I will be raffling off a custom sized pair of longies or shorties, or a soaker, and I'll be raising money for the Women's Rape Crisis Center in Burlington, VT. The Women's Rape Crisis Center provides services to female and male survivors of sexual violence (and their supporters) in Chittenden County, VT. They also provide educational workshops to raise awareness and promote prevention.
I hope to raise at least $100 for WRCC. $100 would provide one night at a safe home for sexual assault survivors. Since the overwhelming majority of survivors are assaulted by someone they already know, it's incredibly important that survivors have a safe place to go. That money could also provide emergency clothing and transportation to someone who was recently assaulted, and could cover the cost of staffing their 24 hotline for three days. Please help me in raising money for this very important organization. I'll post more details soon.

Monster Longies
It's been a long time since I've updated this blog, but I wanted to post a picture of these custom longies I just finished for a mama. These are her monster longies, made with Silke Nostalgia by Arvier. She bought the yarn in Italy and sent it to me to make for her daughter. This yarn is furry, soft and cuddly and, worked up, they resemble the fur on Sesame Street monsters!

First stocking on Hyena Cart today!
Well, the title says it all. I didn't anticipate how nervous I'd feel. I've been crocheting for a long time and wanting to sell things before, but now that I've actually decided to go ahead and do it, there's some anxiety about how people will respond! So, I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope all goes well. Visit me at Pumpkin Pie Baby on Hyena Cart.
I've been busy this week buying new yarn and crocheting some new shorties. I visited 2 local yarn shops in the past week and surprisingly didn't go overboard! I also managed to score some organic merino through EllieBelly on Hyena Cart! She shipped it super quick and I'll be putting it up for a custom spot next week. It's just gorgeous and soft and I'm looking forward to working with it.
I've also found some beautiful Aussi wool yarn at Seaport Yarn. They have 2 retail locations and
an internet shop. I picked up some Sunset (a beautifully shaded orange) and Celestial (a light blue). They'd look beautiful worked up as longies in a single color or used together as a main color with trim. I'll also be putting these up for a customs spot next week and I'll let whoever purchases the spot decide what they'd like best.
Pictures to come soon...
