At this time last winter, while we were hunkering down during a snowstorm, I happened upon this lovely lace stitch. I started swatching and the more I played with the yarns and needles, the more I envisioned flowers in bloom. I designed a sweater, and a hat, and finally a baby blanket and named the patterns Fleuris. Fleuris is a French word meaning "flowery." Knit Picks chose the patterns for their Independent Design Partnership and I've been slowly releasing the patterns as I finished them.

The Fleuris Cardigan is knit in Knit Picks' Comfy Sport in Lilac Mist. Comfy Sport is a cotton/acrylic sport weight blend, perfect for spring, summer, and fall wear. The sweater is knit seamlessly from the bottom up, and the button band is knit as you go. It's a great layering piece over T-shirts or dresses.

The Fleuris Hat is also knit in Comfy Sport in Marlin. The hat is one size, fitting most older girls, teens, and adults.

Lastly, I saw the lace stitch as a beautiful baby blanket. Knit in Comfy Worsted, the Fleuris Blanket is sized as a baby blanket but the pattern includes instructions for making it larger. With the lace stitch throughout, and a broken rib border, the blanket is modern and sophisticated.

Despite massive denial on my part, the holidays are quickly approaching. One of the things I love most about the holidays is giving handmade gifts. This year, I'm joining in with over 300 designers in the Indie Designer Gift-A-Long.

There are a few really great things about the Gift-A-Long. Over 5,000 designs on Ravelry are discounted 25% from now through Saturday, November 28th. Use coupon code giftalong2015 to get the discount on any of these patterns in the Gift-A-Long sale bundle on Ravelry. To shop my patterns, visit my Ravelry store.

If browsing through 106 pages of patterns is too much for you (and it probably is even for the most die hard of knitters), you can look through the Gift-A-Long Pinterest Boards. There, you can look at just one category of patterns at a time.

Once you've chosen a pattern, head on over to the Indie Designer Gift-A-Long group and join in. You can post your works in progress, chat with other knitters, and find lots of beautiful patterns that you maybe hadn't seen before. And one of the perks: lots of great prizes including coupon codes for free patterns. Hope to see you there!

This pattern is dedicated to my good friend Liz and our knitting group. I was lucky to meet Liz 6 years ago. She was knitting a pair of socks at the playground while our kids were playing. I asked her what she was working on, we figured out that two of our children would be going to preschool together, and that was it. She's been a great knitting friend and a great friend.

Once preschool started, we learned that one of the preschool teachers knit. And her mom knit. And Liz's friend knit. And Liz's friend's friend knit. Soon we had a group that met on Thursdays, either at someone's house or at a coffee shop. One of those coffee shops was Mornings in Paris. Pretty soon, I felt like I had expanded my group of friends, the people to whom I felt most close.

Last year, I found out I was moving away. Liz stopped by my house with a skein of yarn and a bottle of wine. I was still so surprised that we were moving that I didn't really know what to say. But I deeply appreciated the gesture.

This winter, after finally settling into our new house and getting through the holiday, I started knitting again. I picked up the skein of yarn Liz gave me and tried to come up with something that would remind me of her and our knitting group. I found a stitch pattern called "Eiffel Tower" by Barbara Walker. I turned the stitch upside down and played with the spacing and size of the repeats. The Mornings in Paris Shawl was born.
I'm working on a new design with generous yarn support from Blue Moon Fiber Arts. One of the colors they sent me: The New Color of Love. Two weeks ago when I got the yarn, I didn't think much of the name. (I did fall in love with the yarn and I promise to write more about this gorgeous yarn in another post.)

But it hit me today. It was a long, cold, snowy winter. Our snow has finally melted. There's still snow in some corners of our yard, but most of it's gone. For months, the landscape was white, then dirty white, then brown.

I have spent the last two days outside, reveling in the sunshine and warm temperatures. And a quick walk around our yard showed me why green is the new color of love.

I feel like I can breathe again. This is our first spring in our new house, so there were lots of surprises. A stream and small waterfall that we can hear from the deck, hyacinths, bulbs coming up where we didn't expect them.

I'll be writing more about the new design soon and hosting a knit a long next month. I hope you'll join us!

I'm excited to be finally publishing the Lotus Shawl. I knit this shawl with very generous yarn support from Knitpicks and it is part of their IDP. Their Shadow lace weight yarn is 100% wool and has a beautiful drape and halo.

I swatched this lace pattern several times before deciding on the right needles and yarn weight. The lace stitch isn't particularly difficult, but it is worked on both right and wrong side rows, so it involves some concentration. I knew I didn't want to have to concentrate that much during the whole shawl, so I cast on and worked in stockinette stitch and garter stitch for most of it. The garter stitch picks up nicely on the garter ridges found in the lace. I finished the shawl with two full tiers of the lace and think it's just enough to satisfy my need for a challenge and provide the detail I wanted.

Working with this stitch solidified for me how much I love working from charts. Charts terrified me at first, but I learned to read them by writing them myself. Anytime I swatched a new lace pattern, I charted it first and, in doing that, I learned how the stitches should align and how to read my knitting. That process has made knitting lace much less daunting and really enjoyable for me.

Details on the shawl are below. The pattern is charted but also includes written row by row instructions for those who prefer that. It's light and airy, warm but not cumbersome. It's a great transitional piece as we head into spring (or even fall).

Sizing
Blocked measurements :: 68” / 172.5 cm across by 32” / 81.5 cm deep
Preblocked measurements :: 52” / 132 cm across by 24.5” / 62 cm deep

Yarn
2 skeins Knitpicks Shadow Tonal in Goldrush; 440 yds / 402 m per 1.7 oz / 50 g skein; 100% merino wool
Note about yarn choice: Shadow Tonal has been discontinued, but Knitpicks still carries Shadow. Shadow is a lace/light fingering weight yarn. A fingering yarn may be used also, although you may want to go up a needle size or two. This sample took approximately 800 yards of yarn.

Needles & Notions
Size 7 US / 4.5 mm 40” / 102 cm circular needles
2 stitch markers
tapestry needle
blocking pins

Gauge
17 sts and 30 rows = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch using Size 7 US / 4.5 mm needles, after blocking
Gauge is not critical for this pattern.

Thank you to my tech editor, Katherine Vaughn, and to my test knitters Andrea, Tina, Agnieszka, and Merrilie.
I would rather make a guess and, guessing wrong, have to give whatever I've made away than make a gauge swatch. I've given a sweater away for that very reason, but at least I had the experience of knitting the sweater, which I guess is what I really wanted.

But making swatches to explore stitch patterns, textures, and motifs, or how two stitch patterns work together: that I love. I love comparing how stitches look different in different yarns and with different needles. I even love charting the stitch patterns on graph paper and making small tweaks to see how the pattern changes overall. I sit on the couch and surround myself with stitch dictionaries and graph paper, pencils, erasers, a red pen, lots of needles, and whatever scraps of yarn I have laying around. I've spent the entire last week doing just that. I've had plenty of failures, but I don't mind those at all. Even the failures teach me something.

The past three weeks have been incredibly snowy and cold. The only way I can see to happily get through these weeks is wool and bamboo needles in front of the wood stove.

Between volunteering at my kids' schools, and moving to a neighboring state, blogging fell to the wayside.

I have been knitting and designing in the meantime, so I'll try to catch you up quickly.

My pattern Agamenticus was chosen as the cover for Knitpicks' Under 100 Collection last winter! Mount Agamenticus is located in Southern Maine and is visible from the beaches at which I spent most summer days. The beach became a fixture in my life for the seven years we lived in Maine and it's something I miss quite a bit, even in the winter.

This Fall, I released my Radiate Hat pattern to complement the Radiate Cowl. I love this pattern because I wanted to work with stripes and I like the effect the slipped stitches make. The patterns also have the added bonus of requiring very little yarn, so they are good for using up leftovers in your stash.

And just last week, I released my Snowshoe Hat pattern. I designed this pattern with two things in mind: I wanted to work a cable (but not too much), and I wanted a pop of color in the middle of winter. So this pattern features just one cable repeat -- the rest of the hat is worked in stockinette stitch -- and I chose Malabrigo Chunky for its gorgeous, saturated colors.

We've got lots of snow here, and lots more still falling, so I've sworn off winter knitting in the hopes that warmer weather will soon be here.Pumpkin Pie Babyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02915539513667989297noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4976785352081843308.post-10745060174625332672015-02-06T17:28:00.000-05:002015-02-06T17:31:23.018-05:00Blooming CowlAbout two weeks before Christmas, I found myself shopping for gloves and scarves at the Bloomingdales outlet. I came upon the most beautiful, brightly colored, soft, drape-y cowl. My first thought was, "I could make this." I think every knitter has that same thought when they find something knitted in a store? My second was, "But not in time for Christmas." So I bought the cowl and gave it as a (hopefully) much loved present.

When I got home, I wanted to replicate the cowl and I wanted to make my daughter's teacher a special gift for Christmas. When we moved, my oldest daughter started at a new school almost three times bigger than her last. I was nervous for her, but her teacher has been amazing. I didn't get the cowl done in time for Christmas, but thankfully her birthday was in early January.

I opened my yarn drawer -- I'm trying to limit myself to three separate places in the house where I store my yarn -- and found a beautiful blue, superwash, worsted weight wool. I bought this wool years ago to make an adult version of the Lucia sweater but, for lots of reasons, that project didn't pan out. One thing that I know about this yarn: it doesn't shine in stockinette stitch. The stitch definition just isn't as crisp as I'd like.

To replicate the drape I found in the cowl at the store, I pulled out Size 11 needles and started working in a pretty basic knit/purl stitch. I guessed at how many stitches it would take to make a 12 or 13" tall cowl (because I couldn't be bothered before the holidays with making a gauge swatch) and started knitting. I knew I wanted a cowl that was fairly long around, and I didn't trust my guess at a gauge be as spot on for that measurement. So I worked flat, which I wouldn't normally do, and seamed the cowl into one big loop when it was long enough. I could knit this cowl on auto pilot, which was a welcome relief at night from the mental accounting it takes to manage Christmas shopping for three girls.

That's the Blooming Cowl :: fairly quick, somewhat mindless, but generous in size and with a lovely drape. I've included instructions for both knitting flat and seaming AND knitting in the round. I hope you enjoy this free pattern!

I thought about this pattern for a long time before actually knitting it. I really didn't know when I'd get around to knitting it. But I walked into my local yarn store about a month ago and saw these 2 skeins.

I started knitting and, as I knit, I saw these radiating columns begin to form. I didn't originally plan to have the columns be different lengths, but as I kept going, I liked how the columns drew your eye around the cowl, almost like spokes on a wheel. And the word radiate came to mind. Not only that spokes radiate from the center of a wheel, but that spring was almost here, and light and warmth were on the way.

I love how simple this cowl is. Take any 2 colors you love and knit this one size cowl for anyone you love.

Each cowl takes only 2 oz. of a main color and 1 oz. of a coordinating color. My sample is knit with Malabrigo Rios in Midnight in Paris and English Rose. These are my two favorite springtime colors together.
I hadn't been to the beach in months. Between snow, and snow, and more snow, and various illnesses that have swept through our house, I haven't ventured outside much at all. Things were starting to feel a bit claustrophobic. But yesterday the girls and I went down to the beach.
When I visit the beach, instead of looking out over the water, I spend my time looking closely at the ground to see what I can find. I find taking this narrow view of things very peaceful.
I'm excited today to release my newest pattern, the Middle Beach scarf. Knit with 2 skeins of madelinetosh dk, it's a simple combination of knit and purl stitches that creates a reversible fabric.
We had two days of respite from what has been a very cold winter so far. The first day of the thaw was foggy and a little bit eerie. I caught these water droplets on a few straggling honeysuckle leaves and the yarn I used to support the plant.

And like that, the thaw is over, and the ice is back. But I am dreaming of spring and longer days. And I'm knitting for spring with a yarn called Frost. It's exactly the color of the water droplets. Fresh and promising.Pumpkin Pie Babyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02915539513667989297noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4976785352081843308.post-81032432957902955622013-01-29T10:50:00.001-05:002013-01-29T10:50:55.467-05:00

Just recently, I've found the love for fingering weight yarn. I purchased some Malabrigo Sock yarn last summer, hoping to make my oldest a poncho. I cast on, even threw in some beading, but an inch or two into the raglan increases I realized that I would be knitting this poncho forever.

I didn't even bother to frog what little progress I'd made on the poncho. I just broke the yarn and started on a pair of socks. I found this gorgeous pattern -- Absinthe by Sara Morris -- and cast on. These socks are worked from the toe up.

I learned Judy's Magic Cast On, which was a little intimidating at first, but it was super easy and fascinating to see how your first two rows magically fit together. No grafting!

This pair of socks was actually enjoyable to knit. I bought 40" long size 1 circular needles. This was a life saver and I can't imagine going back to 4 or 5 dpn's. I also have learned to read charts in the last year or two. While I initially fought learning to read charts, I find it much easier to keep track of where I am in a pattern with a chart.

I wish I had captured some better pictures of these socks before I gifted them to my mom for her birthday, but I'm not as flexible as I used to be. The combination of cables and lace make for a beautiful pair of socks.

Today was a beautiful morning to hit the beach with my knitting. This is one of my favorite spots in town. It's so crowded in the summer that I only make it there once or twice all season long. But now that fall and October are here, I have the place almost all to myself.

I'm working on Briggs Street by Dawn Catanzaro. What a beautiful, simple pattern. I'm using some yarns out of my stash that were originally destined for other projects. But when I saw this project on Ravelry, I abandoned those plans and started right away on my sweater.

I don't hold out much hope for many more beach days this year, although I will be pleasantly surprised and won't complain if there are plenty. Today is one to hold on to.Pumpkin Pie Babyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02915539513667989297noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4976785352081843308.post-46286652946981114062012-04-29T11:29:00.002-04:002015-02-06T15:34:08.922-05:00SugarI'm happy to say that my newest design, Sugar, is included in the latest edition of Petite Purls.
I loved knitting this sweater. From the open, lacy look, to the yarn, it all came together easily.

The yoked cardigan features an i-cord cast on and bind off. I have to admit I was hesitant about including both of these techniques in the design. I tried an i-cord bind off unsuccessfully two years ago when I was knitting a blanket for my youngest niece. I gave up after a few tries and just crocheted a neat little edge around the whole thing.

But a more recent try at knitting Paper Dolls by Kate Davies encouraged me to give the i-cord cast on a try. And it was such a success that I figured it was worth trying the i-cord bind off again. And this time the technique just made much more sense to me.

Some knitters say that you should let the yarn speak to you and tell you what it wants to be. As I've followed this advice more recently, I've abandoned more projects than I care to admit because the yarn just isn't the right fit for the pattern I'm working on. But I think the same thing can be true about techniques. Sometimes you just have to wait for the right project and what was difficult before is easy now. It's all about patience I suppose.

I hope you enjoy knitting Sugar as much as I loved designing it!

Please excuse my months long absence from blogging. I've missed it!

Last fall I purchased a burnt orange, gorgeous Malabrigo Rios and I didn't know what to do with it. I tried swatching some patterns and none looked right. I've been taking to heart the advice that if you let the yarn speak, it will tell you what it wants to be. So I was very excited to find Malabrigo Book 3 in my local yarn store this winter. The minute I spotted the Twisted Cowl by Breean Elyse Miller in Book 3, I knew it was the right fit for my Rios. I have a lot of scarves, so I decided to give this one to a friend. It just needs a few buttons and then it will be hers.

And I've been carrying this scarf around in my purse for the last month or so. It's the Jaywalker Scarf pattern by Jody McKinley. It's for my littlest. Spring arrived early this year in Maine, so she'll have to wait until next fall to wear it, but she gets excited every time I pull it out of my purse to work on it. She's my pajama loving, barefoot child, but I hope she'll wear it when it's finally done.

I've also knit two girls' sweater this winter but I've had to keep them hush hush, as they're samples of my newest sweater pattern coming out soon. I'll post more about it as soon as I can!Pumpkin Pie Babyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02915539513667989297noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4976785352081843308.post-13810024156254530692011-12-14T08:36:00.001-05:002011-12-14T08:36:40.519-05:00yarn along

Just two more gifts to knit before Christmas! Last night I started this pair of fingerless mitts for my daughter. The yarn is an organic merino by Becoming Art in her "Neverland" colorway. My daughter has a hat in this colorway but doesn't wear it as much as she'd like because none of her mittens or gloves match. So I'm hoping she'll be excited to get these mitts.

I'm still reading The Other Boleyn Girl. It's entertaining and easy to read a couple of pages at a time. I've seen so many of you in these Yarn Alongs mention Simplicity Parenting that I finally got a copy for myself yesterday. I'm hoping to get through it over the next couple of weeks, while acknowledging that a book about simplicity is an interesting thing to read during what I think is one of the least simple times of the year.

I hope all of your gift making is coming along well. As always, please feel free to leave a link to your yarn along post in the comments. And thank you to Ginny at small things for hosting another yarn along.
I have always loved making paper snowflakes. They're fairly easy to make and they're simple little decorations for the windows. But mine have always left a little something to be desired.
Last week, I saw this tutorial by Michele of Michele Made Me. In it, she describes how she folds the paper for her snowflakes. I've just always folded the paper in quarters and then folded the quarter into a triangle. But she folds hers differently and that makes all the difference!
It's really the simplest craft. All you need are scissors, paper, and a free minute or two. I love that Michele makes them with recycled materials. I've been using catalog pages from the many pounds of catalogs we've received so far this holiday season while my children have used brightly colored origami papers. Either way, it feels like a new twist on an old craft.Pumpkin Pie Babyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02915539513667989297noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4976785352081843308.post-90595172334544088002011-12-07T00:00:00.000-05:002011-12-07T00:00:08.031-05:00Yarning Along

Hello, little owl! I made him as a gift for my sister for her Christmas tree. Last week he was unstuffed, but just an hour of extra work and he was done. I made his eyes out of felt and affixed them with hot glue. And next time I'd add a little fringe on his scarf, but I do think he's just right anyway.

I'm just about to start working on the second fingerless mitt for my oldest. It's the only thing I'm knitting for her for Christmas. I'm actually doing more sewing this year which is beginning to make me a little nervous given that I am a much better knitter. I'm hoping to start the sewing projects soon. All the fabric is here, I just need to prewash it all.

By the way, I'm really anxious and excited to start the sewing. I'm in love with the fabrics I chose. But I need to prewash them. Prewashing fabrics is, in my opinion, the equivalent of knitting and washing a gauge swatch. They're pretty necessary steps if you want the item to actually fit and look right, but they just seem like obstacles.

And I began reading The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory. I found it for $1 last week at a book sale and like that I don't have to worry about returning it to the library, given that it's rather long. I like historical fiction--although I don't know how accurate this novel is--but I'm enjoying it anyway. It's perfect for picking up and putting down in between things.

I'm happy to say that I'm in good shape for my family's Christmas get together this weekend. Last week, I was feeling a bit panicked about finishing my niece's In Threes cardigan in time, along with all of the other gift making and preparations for this weekend. But thanks to a stomach virus, I was able to stay home for most of last week and just get things done. Not the way I wanted to spend my Thanksgiving, but here I am way ahead of schedule this week!

(The exclamation point above is my trying to put a positive spin on this stomach bug that hit us right before Thanksgiving and derailed our plans. Plus, it had four of the five of us sick at the exact same time, making for a sleepless night. But here we are, healthier now and without the added 5 lbs. I usually gain over Thanksgiving.)

I'm so ahead of schedule that I took a detour to make an owl stuffed ornament. That first picture above is my unstuffed owl and the start of her scarf, because owls need scarves too. I had to make one after seeing these.

And I picked up a copy of Buddha in the Attic to read this week. I had read a positive review of it somewhere. But I'm not getting hooked, and I don't think I'll finish it. The story is about a group of Japanese women who come to the U.S. as brides early in the 20th century. The narrator speaks for all the women collectively and I think that is what has kept me from really engaging with the story. The collective voice mirrors the anonymity and invisibility the women feel here in the U.S., but it's also keeping me from connecting with any of the characters.

What are you reading and knitting this week? Thanks to Ginny at small things for hosting another Yarn Along.
